Over the last 30 years Richard has had the opportunity to contribute to publications relating to his fields of expertise, including the publication of two books.

A New Renaissance: Contemporary Art Commissioning

The first being A New Renaissance: Contemporary Art Commissioning (1996) a practical guide to commissioning art for public spaces and architectural projects from both the perspective of the commissioner and the artist.  This book evolved from a series of booklets he wrote for the Collaborations Committee in 1990 titled Getting it Right: Commissioning for the Artist and Right from the Start: Commissioning for the Client.  The publication is set out as a step by step guide to commissioning including chapters on; commissioning models, briefing issues, concept development, legal issues, fabrication, installation, maintenance and billing.

More than Just a Bridge: Planning & Designing Culturally

The second book in 2006, titled More than Just a Bridge: Planning & Designing Culturally which was published as part of the Intercultural City series by COMEDIA. In the UK.  The book argues for the repositioning of culture as the central factor in thinking about our cities, in approaching urban planning in its many forms, and to influence the design of the built environment.  It explores the need for Cultural Literacy and provides strategies and deliverable outcomes to public and private clients.  By Cultural Literacy the book proposes that this is the ability to read, understand, find significance and evaluate, compare and decode the local culture in a city.
